Art Blakey Biography

Pittsburgh, PA-born bop drum king Art Blakey spent the 1940s working with everyone from swing king Fletcher Henderson to bebop pianist Mary Lou Williams. He is best known, however, as the founder/leader of the Jazz Messengers, one of jazz's most venerable institutions. For nearly four decades, his hard-bop sanctuary was a training ground for some of the best young musicians in jazz, including Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Timmons and Wynton Marsalis.
