When The Simpsons animated short originally debuted on the Tracy Ullman Show in 1987, no one quite knew that this cartoon family from Springfield would become an American cultural icon. Gradually, the short was given more time on the show, and eventually garnered a primetime slot on the FOX television network. Twenty years after its debut, the weekly Simpsons broadcast holds the title for longest running sitcom and longest running animated program in the history of American television. In 2007 The Simpsons Movie was released to critical acclaim. Featuring the regular television cast, the movie also includes cameo voice appearances by Green Day and Tom Hanks.
