Guru (Rap) Biography
Even if Guru never did anything else after teaming with DJ Premier in the late '80s to form the progressive East Coast hip-hop duo Gang Starr, his name would go down in rap history as a creative pioneer. So it's all the more impressive that in the early '90s he blazed a whole new trail by popularizing the use of samples from classic (in this case Blue Note) jazz records to expand the sonic palette of hip-hop tracks. His 1993 album JAZZMATAZZ was a hugely influential blending of bop and rap, and over the next few years, in addition to returning to active Gang Starr duty, Guru recorded two JAZZMATAZZ sequels.
