Alternative music is a genre of rock that emerged in the 1980s and became widely popular in the 90s. The term "alternative" originated sometime in the 80's to describe the freshness of the music and to categorize the "college rock" from the US and the "indie" music coming out of the UK. Many alternative artists during the 80's were cult acts that recorded on independent labels and received exposure through college radio stations, although a few achieved the commercial successes and mainstream recognition, such as R.E.M and The Cure. However, with the breakthrough of Nirvana and the British pop music of the early 90's many alternative bands became widely popular and achieved great commercial success. In the early 2000's, rock music seemed to move away from the alternative roots that were prominent throughout the 90's. However, by 2004 alternative music saw a mainstream resurgence with the popularity of indie rock and post-punk revival artists such as Modest Mouse and Franz Ferdinand. Some of our most popular Alternative artists include Nickelback, Plain White T's, Fall Out Boy, Flyleaf, OneRepublic, and the Jonas Brothers.
