Jazz originated from African American communities in the southern part of the United States. The style of music was influenced by African and European music traditions. Expand Full Text
Some techniques that make Jazz music distinct are the use of blues notes, improvisation, call and response, and the swung note of ragtime. From its inception in the early 20th century, several sub-genres of jazz have been produced. In the 1910s, it was the New Orleans Dixieland. The 30s and 40s had big band style swing and bebop. During the 1950s and 60s we saw a variety of Latin-jazz fusion known as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz. The 70s had jazz-rock fusion and later developments introduced acid jazz. Some of the popular jazz artists are among the biggest names in all of music: Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, George Gershwin, Nat "King" Cole, Herbie Hancock, Dean Martin, and Buddy Guy.
