Artistic concepts such as musical form and aesthetics are not a concern in the writing of pop songs, where the primary objective is audience enjoyment and commercial success. During the 60s we saw Surf Pop from the Beach Boys, the Beatles led the way for the British Invasion, and African American music became part of popular culture introducing new grooves and tempos such as doo wop, rhythm and blues, and Motown. Early 70s Pop was a time for singer-songwriters and other folky artists recording songs like "American Pie" by Don McLean. However, the main influence of the second half of the decade was Disco music. Think "YMCA" by the Village People and "Dancing Queen" by Abba. Sounds from the UK also continued with Rod Stewart's "Maggie May". Pop music really came of age in the 80s. America crowned its own King and Queen of Pop, Michael Jackson and Madonna. Some of the greatest Pop hits to ever be recorded were released during this time: "Physical", "Billie Jean", and "Material Girl". Female performers such as Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, and Whitney Houston dominated Pop music during the nineties. The new millennium brought with it a slew of young "bubble gum" Pop artists and groups such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and the Backstreet Boys. However, as we near the end of the decade it seems that Pop music is evolving even further to include more hip hop beats, dance tracks, and alternative rock sounds. Some of our most popular Pop artists are Fergie, Colbie Caillat, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Maroon 5 and Nelly Furtado.
